Hard Candies
Horehound is the best selling hard candy we make - because we can't NOT make it without enduring the wrath of about a hundred farmers in our area who swear by it "come winter." But here's the truth: You either love horehound candy or you hate it.
Horehound is an herb. We buy the herb-organically grown-dry, and then steep it for about a day. Yes, we basically make a very, very strong tea out of it. (Come to our store and your nose will know when we're making horehound). Then we cook it up with sugar to a hard crack. Our horehound candy looks like amber but not at all like those nasty horehound disks you can buy in "quaint" paper packages at the grocery store.
Our horehound is pungent and the flavor lasts forever. It's cut, for the most part, in squares, and packed in granulated sugar the way it's supposed to be. Buy some for anyone who might be thinking about getting a sore throat. Like we said, farmers swear by the stuff; and those guys (and girls) almost never go to the doctor.
Yes, we're making Cinnamon Hard Candy now even though Devon almost lost her eyebrows on the last batch and Charissa, one of our best high school student workers, discovered - just being in the candy room at the same time - that she's allergic to the highly concentrated cinnamon oil we use. Our cinnamon hard candy is pretty hot, but it depends on the batch, for each one is a little different. Customer Jerry Frye loves our cinnamon, and the folks who don't like horehound buy it for their colds. Very tasty.
